Wave Energy Devices

Benson Engineering has been involved in Wave Energy Device Design for over 15 years.

We are involved in the  Waves to Water prize, aligned with the Water Security Grand Challenge, is a 5-Stage competition that offers up to $3.3 million in cash prizes, with a goal to demonstrate small, modular, cost-competitive desalination systems that use the power of ocean waves to provide clean drinking water for disaster recovery and for remote and coastal communities.

Benson Engineering is currently developing a wave energy device which has completed 1/50 and 1/15 Scale Testing . Next Step is ¼ Scale testing.

Benson engineering has won a Research Award for the SEAI Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland :Sustainable Energy Awards 2013

We were also involved in the SEWEC team which is a finalist in the American Department of Energy , “Wave Energy Prize”

Tom Benson . BSc (Eng), MBA . (Technical Director)

Tom Benson is a Mechanical Engineering graduate of the University of Surrey, UK and founder of Benson Engineering Ltd. In Killarney, a founding member of the Irish Wave Energy Developers Association (IWEDA). Benson Engineering has developed its innovative wave pump through the early TRL gates, successfully tank testing the concept at 1/50th scale and 1/15th scale. Extensive experience has been gained in the wave energy field in numerical modelling, model building and tank testing. A ¼ scale model will be tested in the ¼ scale Smart Bay test site in the sea in Galway Bay Ireland in Q4 2015 and 2016. This device is fixed to the sea bed and driven by a point absorber buoy.
